Art and law. A guide

Following the successful initiative on the use of Open Access in Internet and AI law, the next step is already underway: a new book by Marie-Therese Wirtz and Thomas Hoeren on art and law has just been published for free download via Open Access – a comprehensive guide for artists on dealing with copyright law, gallery contracts, social security law and much more. This can of course also be purchased from Lit Verlag.

The guide is aimed at young artists and those who would like to gain initial access to central questions of applied art law. It offers a basic orientation in the areas of copyright and copyright contract law as well as an introduction to accompanying topics such as personality and data protection law, the legal framework of artistic self-employment or artists’ social insurance. In a clear and understandable way, and taking into account the perspective of an up-and-coming artist, he addresses questions on the protection of art through copyright law, on the possibilities of exploitation and their legal structure through typical contracts from the art world or on the legal limits of artistic creation. As of 2024, it also takes into account the far-reaching copyright reform in 2021 and highly topical issues such as digital distribution channels and dealing with AI. As a valuable reference work, it thus serves as preparation for and support in the professional reality of artists.
