New podcast episode on balancing family and career as an IP lawyer

In keeping with tomorrow’s International Women’s Day, we’re back with a new installment of our women lawyers’ stories – this time in the form of a a special on the topic of Reconciling family and career.

We were able to win two guests for this event: Jessica Bucher and Dr. Ulrike Kaufmann. Both work as intellectual property lawyers at Maucher Jenkins. Ulrike has been part of the firm’s Freiburg team since 2019 and is now a senior associate, primarily responsible for patent, utility model and trademark law. Jessica joined the firm in 2023 and supports her clients primarily in trademark and competition law as well as design and copyright law. Both guests had their first child at around the same time. But while Ulrike had already been working at the law firm for several years at that time, Jessica had only just started working as a lawyer.

In the following, Ulrike and Jessica share their individual experiences of balancing family and career. They talk about what it was like for them to start a family as a young lawyer, the challenges they faced and what their new everyday life is like.

The topic of family and career has also been addressed in some previous episodes. But we haven’t been able to talk about it in as much detail as in this episode. Since this is a topic that concerns many young lawyers and unfortunately finds little room in their training, we are particularly pleased that Ulrike and Jessica were willing to talk so openly about their experiences.
